Daam shows a friendship between two University students from polar opposite backgrounds and how one misunderstanding changes everything forever.
Zara (Sanam Baloch) is from a lower middle class family who are struggling to make a living. Zara is the only one in the family who has been able to go to University through a scholarship and works extremely hard in order to reach her goal of getting a secure future for herself and her family.
Maleeha (Aamina Sheikh) is from an upper middle class family who does not lack from anything. She has a loving family and is able to get anything that she wants, yet, she is down-to-earth and does not let money get to her head.
Despite a huge class difference, this does not affect Zara and Maleeha's friendship and they have an unbreakable bond. Or so, that's what it seems.
Fiza (Sanam Saeed), who is Maleeha's cousin, has never liked Zara due to her status. She always tries to put her down and has also tried to brainwash Maleeha many times against her, which has never worked until Maleeha's elder brother, Junaid (Adeel Husain), comes into the picture.
What made Maleeha change her mind about Zara? How was it linked to Fiza and Junaid? You'll need to watch the drama to find out.
Apart from the core storyline, there are also a few other storylines branched out, including Maleeha's relationship with her fiance and how that ends up changing later on negatively as well as Zara's family and how each member is struggling with their own issues and how Zara supports them.
I personally really enjoyed watching this drama and it is one of my favourites. It was a drama that showed realistic characters which the general public of Pakistan could relate to which was one of the reasons it became a popular watch.
Mehreen Jabbar, who is my favourite director of Pakistani dramas always ensures to show real social issues of Pakistan in her dramas which helps the audience to connect to. This was the same case with Daam.
I love how they showed each household and we were able to see the comparisons between the two. There is a scene where Maleeha goes to Zara's house with Junaid to drop off an invitation card. This scene was extremely powerful and showed how different both these girls lifestyles really are outside of their University life.
Overall, everyone's acting was commendable. I remember this was the first drama I watched of Aamina Sheikh, Adeel Husain and Sanam Saeed and I was instantly impressed by them.
Due to the drama's popularity, it also aired in India in 2015, 5 years after it was originally premiered.
